The car of the future is more than a mobile platform containing a power unit, some electronics and software; rather, it is a highly networked mobile IT platform. This development is not only driven by the established automobile manufacturers, but also by new start-ups and leading IT companies.
A certain degree of freedom is necessary for the successful development of this evolution of the automobile and to pursue ground-breaking ideas. This degree of freedom is nurtured in our in-house advance development. Here, energetic teams of employees, Ph.D. candidates and students are tinkering with new software and hardware solutions and working meticulously on the realization of customer requirements of the distant future. The team is researching and developing a broad range of fields of innovation - for example Industry 4.0 and smart factory, networked mobility, 5G as well as HMI (Human Machine Interface), which are all interconnected and inspiring one another. Our innovative solutions in the field of virtual and augmented reality enable us to design the development and security of the automobile of the future more efficiently. In order to consider all aspects, our advance development team regularly exchanges ideas with experts from all areas of specialization, international bodies as well as universities. Developing tomorrow today - this is what MAGNA Telemotive has already been doing yesterday.
The automotive industry has long gone digital - three-dimensional models of vehicles have been designed for example with CAD programs for decades. But only virtual reality transports the user into the digital world and VR goggles enable him or her to analyze real-life test results and interact with the digital world. In contrast to virtual reality, augmented reality supplements the real world with the appropriate digital data, depending on the situation. This way, the user can enjoy the advantages of both worlds. Especially the vehicle communication, which is otherwise invisible, becomes visible and can be experienced this way - an important step toward the future of Industry 4.0. What's more, automated, situation-specific instructions can also be compiled in this fashion. In contrast, for the correct interpretation of the digital data of two-dimensional worlds, the user requires higher abstract thinking skills as well as a better spatial sense.
Constructed digital worlds - whether two- or three-dimensional - are a major asset: They enable the eco-friendly and realistic conceptual design and testing of new features in vehicles and the low-cost implementation of modifications - long before a prototype is produced. For example when it comes to the simulation of journeys, the acceleration of the hardware and software development as well as the reduction of on-street testing. In so doing, controllers in the vehicle are exchanging measured values and other data. Data loggers are recording this communication, enabling experts to search for errors in the development. Analyses and developments, as well as training and the protection of project deliverables become considerably easier.
5G is the future - at MAGNA Telemotive, it is already the daily routine. Thanks to decentralized data transmission, the mobile communications standard of the future enables the lighting-fast transmission of large quantities of data and delivers a high degree of reliability and security - the basis for comprehensive networking and thus for autonomous driving.
Every exchange of data generates spontaneous networks, known as "ad-hoc networks". They work by means of an established architecture of senders and recipients, referred to as "mobile edge cloud".
MAGNA Telemotive is a member of 5G Lab, a consortium set up at the University of Technology (TU) of Dresden, which collaborates with the industry and research community to establish the mobile communications architecture of the future. As a result, we are a major contributor to this topic, providing our customers with the latest solutions.

Companies such as Magna and research institutions such as the University of Technology (TU) of Graz are members of the ALP.lab consortium in Graz. We support the project in particular with our own advance development in the following areas: data collection, data reduction, data transmission, data storage, data fusion, data analysis and generation of metadata. The ALP.lab test tracks for autonomous driving are a unique Europe-wide testing infrastructure scheduled to be launched within the next few years.
For the display, we rely on the technology and know-how of the gaming industry. Computer and console games are the pioneers in the real-time calculation of detailed and dynamic worlds. The new boom of virtual reality is deeply seeded in the gaming scene; for this reason, tools used in this environment naturally offer a particularly high degree of compatibility with these topics. Moreover, the interaction with two- and three-dimensional contents has always been a characteristic trait of these games. Thanks to readily available gaming engines, the efforts for developing own games or game-like applications have decreased substantially. In addition, invaluable detailed and general know-how has been amassed by professional and hobby developers and can be exchanged in a fairly open-minded community.
At MAGNA Telemotive, both two- as well as three-dimensional worlds are an integral part of our work environment. Combined with the necessary creativity and the required many years of hands-on experience, we are working on the solution of problems related to automobiles of the future, today.
Telemotive Test Automation is a user-friendly framework based on the open-source and ultra-flexible programming language Python. It greatly simplifies the test automation for both manufacturers and component suppliers. The high throughput at the same time increases the quality and reliability of the test results. And best of all: The straightforward handling - the HTML5 user interface offers an intuitive operation of Telemotive Test Automation. Easy to understand documentations and tutorials are available to answer any questions that may arise. A particularly valuable feature: The results of all test scenarios are archived compliant with audit requirements and can be retrieved at any time. With its flexible interfaces, Telemotive Test Automation can be connected to both existing test management systems as well as to manufacturer and tier 1 company-specific frameworks. Whether it is used for a preliminary overview and a simple test scenario or for highly complex requirements: Telemotive Test Automation is the perfect solution.
